TWO IMPORTANT OPENERS either side of the Irish sea in two days.
Armagh open their All-Ireland championship campaign against Cavan tomorrow, but theyโll be without the services of one of their leading stars. Caroline OโHanlon is tied up, captaining Northern Ireland at the Netball World Cup in Liverpool with their opening clash against Australia underway [live on Sky Sports Arena and their Youtube channel].
Well into her 18th season of inter-county football, the 34-year-old doctor is well used to balancing commitments between the Orchard county set-up and her Super League club, Manchester Thunder, flying between both. But this is on another level.
Sheโs leading her side on the worldโs biggest stage, but will undoubtedly be following her team-mates back home. Likewise, theyโll be keeping an eye on their World Cup star across the water over the next few days.
โCarolineโs away with the netball now at the minute,โ Armaghโs leading forward Aimee Mackin tells The42. โSheโs flying it.
โRecently, we were looking at an advertisement and next thing Caroline pops up on Sky Sports. Itโs sort of like the ladies football, itโs progressing. Itโs very big in England as well.โ
The 2014 LGFA Player of the Year is definitely to the fore of that progression, helping Thunder to the Super League title in May, while sheโs also been a huge part of the constant positive developments in ladies football on these shores over the past few years.
OโHanlon is one many across the length and breadth of the country admire, not just for her footballing skills and devastating performances in the Armagh midfield, but for her laudable ability to juggle the two sports and life as a doctor.
22-year-old Mackin has always looked up to her, and now one of the finest forwards in the country, would credit OโHanlonโs influence not only on her own game, but on the entire sport of ladies football on and off the pitch.
โItโs massive,โ Mackin, whoโs in her fifth year on the Armagh panel, nods when sheโs asked about the shift in the game, and how much ladies football has come on through the years.
She mentions the countyโs McKeever Park project which will see them make history with a centre of excellence before talking about the sport in general: โItโs a big step for our county and hopefully it improves the development of ladies football
โEven when I started, there were a lot of leaps and bounds from talking to the girls that played years back. From starting out, the past four or five years weโve taken massive steps. Itโs only good for the game and good for the upcoming future players.
โItโs exciting for new players breaking in, we have a few on the panel. Itโs probably the best time to be coming in.โ
Itโs hard to believe that in her early twenties, Mackin is one of the most experienced players on her county side and most definitely one of the leaders at this stage.
โI donโt really think too much into it,โ she smiles. โI sort of forget that Iโm one of the experienced ones because Iโm one of the young ones too.
โI just enjoy it. If anyone needs help on the panel, Iโll try help them out. Iโm the same, I still look to the older ones with more experience and that.โ
The Shane OโNeillโs star and University of Jordanstown student has someone very close to her on the team; her 20-year-old sister Blaithin.
The younger of the two has also made waves since coming onto the inter-county scene, the sister act combining to wreak havoc up front. Evidently, itโs enjoyable.
โItโs good, itโs really good. We enjoy playing together. Itโs like a telepathic thing. We donโt dwell on each other too much but, itโs more about everyone else. It is nice playing with your sister.
โWe try not to fight on the pitch,โ she laughs, reassuring that even if there are words exchanged in the heat of battle, theyโre back to normal fairly quickly afterwards.
โI think thatโs the most important thing, weโre probably both thick skinned. Itโs the same with everyone on the team: whatโs said on the pitch stays on the pitch. Emotions can take over sometimes.โ
With their brother, Connaire, on the Orchard menโs panel and four girls and two boys in the Mackin household in total, itโs most definitely a busy one.
โThereโs a lot of football going on,โ she beams. โPlenty of matches to go to all over the place.โ
Never a truer word spoken. Even just for Aimee alone, whoโs also a talented soccer player with Sion Swifts in the Womenโs Premiership, the top level womenโs football league in the North.
โI love it, I really enjoy playing it,โ she enthuses, explaining how thereโs a few girls with county Gaelic football experience involved with the Strabane outfit, Donegalโs Ciara Grant being one. Mackin has had to cut back however after a recent injury.
โI had a problem with my knee there with tendinitis. I missed the [Ulster] semi-final against Monaghan. Itโs managed now and itโs grand. I just had to cut down on the load outside of county and that. Itโs going well now, no bother.
โI was two or three weeks doing my own programme. The week of the semi-final, I was in match training but I wasnโt fit enough to get on the pitch.
โIโve been fortunate enough. Even this injury, itโs not the worst you could have. Itโs frustrating being on the sidelines but I feel every other player can go out and do a job. Against Monaghan, every other player showed that.โ
After beating the Farney, Armagh had a disappointing Ulster final against Donegal, with Maxi Curran collecting their third provincial crown on the bounce after a 15-point win.
While it wasnโt the result they were looking for, it was an enjoyable and competitive championship and one Armagh take a lot from going forward.
โItโs exciting,โ Mackin says of the fierce Ulster competition. โItโs stuff you look forward to.
โYou donโt really dwell on how close itโs going to be because you just know itโs going to be a great game. Itโs probably one of the tightest championships of all of them. Itโs exciting for the neutral to watch and see the results.
โWeโre lucky enough that we can have a preliminary round, a semi-final and then the final obviously. Unfortunately, for other counties they might just have a straight final. You like to build up the amount of games, you prefer it just to build up momentum.โ
Sheโll be hoping they have some of that when they face the Breffni tomorrow at St Aidanโs, Bawnboy [throw-in 2pm] in their Group 1 opener.
With Munster champions, Division 1 league holders and 2018 All-Ireland finalists Cork also upcoming opposition, theyโre ready for what will be an exciting three-way battle.
โCavan up first. Theyโll be tough, theyโre very physical. We played them on this pitch before in the league last year and it was a draw. I think that says it all.
โThereโs always that rivalry, itโs definitely an Ulster thing. You canโt go by results, itโs whatever happens on the day.โ
โObviously Cork are probably sitting there favourites to top the group,โ she concludes. โBut weโre just excited to get back on the pitch after provincial finals, and looking forward to it.โ

Fair play to him taking these chances and holding his place. He will be tested in the air as will Lowe and Larmour this weekend but weโll able to ride it out.
Itโs great to see players using the 7โฒs area as a way to add new strings to their bow. He has had a really good season and with he opportunities given by Leo has grabbed them with both hands.
Hopefully he continues to get better.
Such a pity they couldnโt celebrate properly. A lot of dry legs in McSorleys that night.
Great player with all the required skills. Himself & Shane Daly will be pushing Larmour hard for the Ireland 15 shirt after next season.
@Daithรญ Oโ Donnabhain: Iโd say its between Stockdale Larmour and Conway
@Rudiger McMonihan: yup between those 3 for now, but Keenan & Daly both have what it takes to challange if they stay fit & in form.
Larmour is being backed by Leinster & Ireland as our 15. Canโt see Conway at 15, Munster wonโt play him there & need him more on the wing. Stockdale is being tried @ 15 up North, so with more experience heโs definitely an option. Keenan & Daly will definitely come into the mix though. Stockdale & Keenan are both 24 & Larmour & Daly both 23, some excellent quality from those four to build on, plus they all cover fullback & wing.
@Daithรญ Oโ Donnabhain: they are great in the air and defence but dont offer enough in attack for me. Farrell and whoever succeeds him might not be looking for that style of FB though. I must admit, I thought stockdale was older than that. Its amazing how much hes accomplished becoming one of the senior ulster players and a nailed on irish starter in such a short period.
Fastest player in Leinster apparently !
100% a winger
