Ireland's most prolific striker's Euro 2016 hopes suffer blow

The 27-year-old Dubliner has scored 19 goals for Aberdeen this season.

THERE WAS BAD news for Irish striker Adam Rooney today, as the Aberdeen hitman was ruled out for up to six weeks.

The 27-year-old has scored 19 goals for his club this season and is the most prolific Irish striker who is in with a realistic chance of making the Euros squad in the summer.

Rooney has been on the periphery of recent Ireland squads, but has yet to win a cap at senior level.

“Adam took a slight strain on his thigh doing some shooting after training on Thursday,” coach Derek McInnes told BBC Scotland.

“It’s developed into something a wee bit more. He’s going to be for a good few weeks. You would have to suggest it will be in the region of six weeks.”

Today’s news means the former Stoke and Birmingham player is unlikely to be included in the Ireland squad for the upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia later this month, which would have been a potential chance to win his first cap and impress boss Martin O’Neill.

And he is not the only Irish frontman with injury troubles, as Shane Long went off with a knock against Chelsea earlier today.
