FORMER NEW ENGLAND Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has killed himself in prison the Massachusetts Department of Correction (DOC) has said.
Hernandez was serving a life sentence for the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2013.
In May 2015, he was indicted for the double murder of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, a crime he was found not guilty of this month.
In a statement this morning, the DOC said the 27-year old was found hanged in his cell at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley Massachusetts.
“Aaron Hernandez was discovered hanged in his cell by corrections officers at approximately 3.05am.
Life-saving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez and he was transported to UMASS Leominster where he was pronounced dead at 4.07am by a physician.”
Massachusetts state police are investigating.

Frightening story of one man’s downward spiral from the fulfillment of the American Dream to death by suicide in prison.
@Jack Cassady: and all at the age of27.
@Jack Cassady: sounds like the tagline for the film Hollywood will most certainly make about this
An all around tragic story. For all the families and victims involved. The 30 for 30 is going to be crazy
I love how the 42 cheerfully plug their Instagram on the bottom of an article about someone committing suicide.
@Simon Moore: it’s in the bottom of every article in fairness.
@Armchair Follower: it’s a footer ya sap. Its automatically appears on any article.
@Simon Moore: Simon are you one of the “looking for stuff to be offended about”, generation snowflake, brigade?
@John S: yes he is.
Simon, get f******
@Le Strange: ha haven’t heard “ya sap” in years =D> @):-
‘#DEAD’ – very subtle
He had previously been a “tight end”. How apt that has turned out to be!
A player i really liked but my god he was a bad ba#tard this boy was in a lot more trouble that this lets on he shot a lot of people
@ross guilfoyle:
Almost seems as if it was his destiny to blaze brightly then crash and burn.
Saves the people of Massachusetts the cost of keeping him in prison for the next 50 years.
“Found hanged” does not equal “killed himself”.
@HonDeDeise: Well, since he’s 6’2″ and 18 stone of muscle – I severely doubt anyone else did it.
@Seán Ó Briain: 18 stone of wobbly from the prison food
@Seán Ó Briain: i think the journalist, steve o’rourke is over extending in writing that headline. Have the guys blood toxicology results come back yet? Could have been sedated and then hung. Weight is pretty irrelevant. No mention of a suicide note.
I do agree, he probably killed himself, but if i was the editor of the journal, i wouldnt have printed that.
@HonDeDeise: I think it’s refreshing that the prison service released the statement saying he killed himself as usually suicides are brushed off as something else , because people are afraid to say it.
@lunadoran: I’m not sure they did say that…look at whats in quotation marks….
@HonDeDeise: it’s exactly what they said. Found hanged and had attempted to block the door by jamming things against it
@Seán Ó Briain: that’s nothing big in the US prison system
He shot one guy in the head but the guy survived and sued him. Then he’s implicated in two other murders over accidently spilling his drink and then he murdered the young footballer, absolute psychopath that happened to be good at football.
Talk about a fall from grace. Once a Pro bowl TE for the New England Patriots making millions of dollars. To taking his own life in a prison cell.
This man had it all and he threw it away. Sad story all round.
Money isn’t everything
Coward!!
I know what he did was completely wrong but still no one is pure evil may he rip
Suicide or suicided…….
He seemed to be a complete psychopath, murdered 3 people for basically no reason. Had it all and threw it all away
@Kieran Wemyss Crowe: well one.. He was acquitted of the other two
