1. Kevin Keegan’s ‘love it’ rant
WITH THE TITLE slipping out of Newcastle’s hands in the 1995-96 season, Keegan, clearly irritated by Alex Ferguson’s suggestion that Leeds had raised their game against the Red Devils, declared that he would “love it” if the Magpies beat United.
2. Giovanni Trapattoni’s Bayern outburst
Feeling the pressure at Bayern, the one-time Ireland coach made no attempt to hide his anger at the way things were panning out at the club.
3. ‘Which one is Simon Bird?’
After suspecting the club had been the subject of unfair criticism in the media, the then-Newcastle boss didn’t hold back in letting his feelings be known.
4. ‘You don’t listen really well to me’
Annoyed after dropping points to Hull, the Arsenal boss took exception to a BBC reporter’s apparent misinterpretation of what he claimed had gone wrong on the day.
5. ‘Typical Germans’
Alex Ferguson was fuming after he believed Bayern players had got United player Rafael da Silva sent off during a Champions League clash between the sides.
6. ‘Whose phone is that?’
An epic rant in which Keane castigated both the FAI and the Irish team for failing to overcome France in a World Cup playoff, the then-Ipswich manager became even more peeved when he was interrupted by a reporter’s mobile phone.
7. ‘No wonder he’s in the f**king reserves’
Veteran manager Harry Redknapp once did not take kindly to a ball being accidentally struck at him while the coach was conducting an interview. The manager’s anger was clear from his response.
8. ‘We’re being lectured in our own home’
Famously confrontational, then-Nottingham Forest boss Brian Clough decided to outline his issues with Match of the Day to reporter John Motson during one frosty interview.
9. ‘You can sit there and play with your silly little machines as much as you like’
After Coventry were beaten and their relegation worries deepened, Ron Atkinson was not happy with Sky’s Richard Keys’ suggestion that the side were underperforming.
Pity it’s nearly over. It was brilliant.
These games were fantastic. Helped me forget about the doom and gloom for a bit over the last two weeks. Loved the swimming, the track events& cycling Bolt and Co were amazing. And of course our own team did a great job. Hopefully it will inspire kids out there and bring pride back to this country.
I really enjoyed the games! Thought after the amazing opening ceremony everything that followed would be a let down but by god I was wrong! Absolutely loved watching the sports, some of which I had never seen before! London did good, it has to be said! And well done and congrats to all who flew the flag for Ireland! Ye all did us proud!(“,)
Great two weeks of entertainment and a chance to forget the doom and gloom. Just shows what a bit of success can do for our national sense of well being. We really needed the lift. Hope it’s not spoilt by petty wrangling over money and unnecessary interference by politicians. Best moments were of course Katie Taylor and the boxers and other great performances by Annalise Murphy, Cian O Connor, Rob Heffernan and Gavin Noble. A sport I had never seen before was the dressage and I found it fascinating. Horses can dance! Amazing!
Sweden playing France in the Handball not the Volleyball !
Two sports we do not Care about either way! Volleyball is only good if played on a beach by cute women ;)
What about the boxing officials sent hope and Russia saying boxing is fixed ???
And let’s not forget the thousands of Irish fans that made it over to London for the games, who otherwise might not have been able to go if it was halfway across the world, it probably is the closest we will ever have to a HOME GAMES so that has been fantastic, London should be proud of the games they have put on.
