IRELAND LOOK TO have lost the first battle of the week with Sweden.
Giovanni Trapattoni has indicated his strong preference for the roof at Stockholm’s Friends Arena to remain open on Friday night for the crucial World Cup qualifier.
But FIFA have today told Swedish media that it makes sense for the arena to be protected from the elements.
“It is reasonable that the way to secure the best conditions to play football for both teams as well as to provide safe and good relationships with the public and those who work with the event,” FIFA wrote in response to a question from Sportbladet.
Trap earlier this week insisted a closed roof — and louder atmosphere — would be an advantage to the home side. Ireland travel to Stockholm this evening after training in Malahide this morning.
