ETHIOPIA’S KENENISA BEKELE came home in first place during a windy afternoon at the Phoenix Park for SPAR Great Ireland Run
Around 10,000 participants, including 1,500 children, showed up on the day with Bekele finishing the 10k run in 28 minutes 51 seconds – ahead of runner-up Sergiy Lebid of Ukraine and world 10,000m champion Ibrahim Jeilan in third.
With Ireland’s Fionnuala Brittton deciding to sit the race out, Lauren Howarth of Great Britain won the women’s event (Gemma Steeland Julia Bleasdale were second and third respectively) while Paul Robinson from Kildare won the inaugural Great Ireland Mile in 4 minutes 14 seconds.
