PRAISE THE RUGBY gods for water breaks. Irelandโs players might have done some warm-weather training to prepare for this, but theyโre certainly not accustomed to playing in 35ยฐC heat.
Things will be hot and heavy at Stade de Bordeaux this afternoon as Andy Farrellโs team finally get their tilt at World Cup glory up and running with a clash against Romania [KO 2.30pm Irish time, Virgin Media].
After all the previews, predictions, premonitions, and palaver, it really is good to get stuck into the rugby. Ireland are huge favourites against the minnows of Pool B, with Romaniaโs world ranking of 19th highlighting how difficult itโs going to be for them against the number one side in the game.
Barring a disaster of unparalleled magnitude, Ireland will extend their winning streak to 14 games this afternoon and while the searing sunshine might make it uncomfortable at times, the sheer strength of Farrellโs selection for this game suggests that the Romanians wonโt have a momentโs rest aside from those water breaks.
Up in the stands of the 42,000-capacity venue, the visiting Irish fans will no doubt have plenty of fluids on board too. There will be a party atmosphere, as well as an air of expectation for this opener. Farrell hopes his players can stay on-task.
22-year-old Joe McCarthy is the only inexperienced player Farrell has picked in his starting XV but the Leinster lock has earned a chance with the front-liners on account of his strong pre-season. Farrell has kept a few wise heads in reserve here, suggesting they will start against Tonga in Irelandโs second clash, but this is an Irish team set to make a resounding opening statement.
The return of captain Johnny Sexton will attract plenty of attention and rightly so. Farrell wants to win the Webb Ellis Cup, so Sextonโs fitness and form will be highly influential. Heโs surrounded by class in a side that should have far too much for the Oaks.
Ireland have had a pleasant build-up at their training base in Tours and arrived in Bordeaux on Thursday after a two-hour ride on the high-speed TGV train. They were clapped into their new team hotel in Bordeaux and itโs likely there will be plenty more adulation today given the thousands of Irish who have flooded into the city.
Romanian boss Eugen Apjok, who is being supported by the experienced Vern Cotter, has reshuffled the side that lost to Italy in their final warm-up game with an interesting selection at out-half. Hinckley Vaovasa is better known as a centre, wing, or fullback but he moves to number 10 for this game. His footwork is sharp and his kicking game is good, but it will be a big ask to run the ship under pressure from Ireland.
The Romanians havenโt had a great build-up and there is worry that this could be a blow-out scoreline, which we never want to see at World Cups. The Oaks will have to be at their grittiest, most aggressive, scrappiest best to just stay in touch with Farrellโs side.
These nations met in the pool stages in 2015 and it was a phenomenal occasion as a record World Cup crowd of 89,267 turned up in Wembley. Ireland went without many key players that time but still won convincingly on a 44-10 scoreline.
So the likelihood is that it will be a happy opening effort for Ireland before they rotate their team against Tonga on the second weekend of the tournament. Farrell welcomes adversity, as we know, but heโll hope to see his front-liners coming through unscathed today, particularly given that three squad members โ Dan Sheehan, Jack Conan, and Dave Kilcoyne โ werenโt available today due to injuries.
Farrell has also laid it out in plain language that heโs not in the mood for Ireland to take their eye off the ball, so anything other than a slick, cohesive performance will leave him frustrated.
If Ireland are World Cup contenders, they must start with a ruthless edge in Bordeaux.

This stinks of โJobs for the Boysโ to b honest. Has Micko done much at underage/schools/club level (genuine question)?
Denis.Listโs his experience right there in the article. Leinster have made a similar appointment with Cullen next season
And Cullen will be working with the Senior squad, Micko is looking after the A side.
Micko hopefully can pass on his great technical knowledge especially lineout work. As you say thou the backโs coach appointment is the crucial one
With POC still in situ ,itโs really hard to see what MOD could possibly bring after a stint coaching at schools level. This smacks of a very Munster job for one of the boys
Not a fan of players that r just retired nd then fall in coaching same playersโฆ.can cloud decisions., for example is mick goin to recommend a player that he was great friends with to be dropped if his form is poorโฆ.???
He is retired 2 seasons at this stage. A big turnover of the playerโs at munster since then.

Yea retired two years but not too many guys he wouldnt have trained or played with.It could be a great appointment but personally I wouldnt agree.
The impressive Rob Penney was shafted by the Munster Rugby board in order to make way for their good old boy, Anthony Foley, to become head coach; who in turn is intent on employing his good old boys instead of seeking the direct input of those with an enlightened, outside perspective. Group-think will now prevail.
Munster will be the big loser because Foley wonโt have the same progressive-minded outlook and plan that Penney has. Munster will regress into their shell under Anthony Foley, and the slack will be compensated for by utter blarney from Foley and the media.
As a Leinster fan I hope your wrong.
If insider knowledge points to foley knowing something that mod can bring then thereโs nothing wrong with appointing the right man for the job. If heโs giving his old pal a leg up it will fall apart along with his own career.
I donโt believe Anthony foley wants to throw away his carreer to give his mate a job.
Penney wasnt shafted.
Micko is looking after the aโs. Not first team. Might have little to do with the seniors.
Must be a pisser for Penny to see next years coaching ticket been lined up , could this be announced by Munster after Pennys gone ..
They let the cat out of the bag early enough this year bout him moving. Why should nexus years coaching ticket be any different? Iโm sure he doesnโt hold a grudge.
Hope Iโm wrong but has a โ jobs for the boysโ ring to it
Micko being linked to the A squad hints fairly strongly that Ian costello could be the backs coach for the seniors.
this time last year there was howls about the fact that not one province had a native head-coach, now thereโs howls when a native is appointed head coach & opts to select another native to be part of his coaching team?
Micko was known as a top-notch lineout analyst in his playing days, he had a very large part to play in the strength of the munster lineout in the past as he analysed the opposition lineouts & ran those patterns in training.
