LAST UPDATE | 21 Jan 2023
BOTH THE IRELAND Men and Women are through to this evening’s quarter-finals in New Zealand on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
Ireland Women will face France next in Hamilton [9.14pm Irish time], while then men will go head-to-head with New Zealand [11.04pm Irish time].
Both sides kicked off their respective campaigns with wins yesterday, and there were mixed fortunes overnight.
The Ireland men’s team began with a 14-12 win over Uruguay. Aaron O’Sullivan put Ireland in front with a try after six minutes while Bryan Mollen crossed over for a try in the 15th minute. Uruguay also picked up two tries but conversions from Billy Dardis and Mark Roche proved to be the difference between the sides.
Later, they drew 14-14 with USA, where Ed Kelly and Andrew Smith were the try-scorers, and defeated Japan 33-12. Smith, Roche, Jordan Conroy, Terry Kennedy and Harry McNulty all went over.
The Ireland women’s team were also victorious yesterday, outgunning Brazil by 28-5. Eve Higgins, Lucy Hall, and a brace from Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe powered Ireland to an emphatic win.
They later defeated Spain on a scoreline of 31-5 after tries from Murphy Crowe, Kathy Baker, Lucy Mulhall, Beibhinn Parsons and Emily Lane, and fell to a 15-7 defeat to USA, Megan Burns the sole try-scorer.
Both sides return to action again tonight as the series continues.
Through to the quarters in NZ! 🙌
