IRELAND’S MEN’S AND Women’s teams have progressed to the final eight at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town.
Ireland’s men’s team beat England 17-5 in the last-16. After a cagey start, Harry McNulty scored a superb solo effort. Mark Roche and Jordan Conroy both touched down in the second half to ensure the final few minutes were just about managing the clock.
Earlier this morning, they beat Portugal in a knockout tie 24-0.
Terry Kennedy, who was the top try-scorer in this year’s World Rugby Sevens Series, opened the scoring with a solo effort on two minutes.
Hugo Lennox and Sean Cribbin then added tries, with Mark Roche successfully kicking two of his three conversions. They now face South Africa or Chile in tomorrow’s quarter-final at 09.33pm.
Meanwhile, the women’s team got their tournament underway with a 24-12 victory over Brazil.
An Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe double and tries from Lucy Mulhall and Beibhinn Parsons helped Ireland to a quarter-final against New Zealand or Columbia. That Saturday night game takes place at 07.05pm.
