MICHAEL BRACEWELL’S UNBEATEN century guided New Zealand to a dramatic one-wicket win, with just a ball to spare, in the first one-day international against Ireland on Sunday.
New Zealand, chasing 301 to win, were in dire straits at 120-5 and they still needed 20 runs off the last over with only one wicket standing.

But Bracewell hit Craig Young for 24 off five balls — a sequence of 4, 4, 6, 4, 6 — to be 127 not out as the Black Caps finished on 305-9.
Earlier, Ireland’s Harry Tector made 113, his maiden ODI hundred, in the hosts total of 300-9 at the Malahide ground near Dublin.

A seventh defender is always going to be more effective at this time of year with the ground being heavier and the ball moving slower in general, along with the fact that there is going to be a lot more rucks. When it comes to the summer it is a lot easier to play around a sweeper and negate there influence. Cant’ see it being much of a different story for Wexford when it comes to championship again this year. Which is a pity with the quality of players they have at there disposal.
It may not be pretty viewing for the spectator seeing it blocked up in the middle third but it has been working for them. Not sure how long it lasts in a county without them getting fed up of the system Davy employs as it had been with us at clare although.
