5 winners and 5 losers from Transfer Deadline Day

Radomel Falcao and more stars who have defined the last 24 hours of speculation.

WINNERS

1. Kevin Doyle

THE IRELAND STRIKER looked set for a few months in the wilderness, with Wolves making it clear he was unwanted there. Luckily for Doyle though, Palace came in with a late offer and the deal was ultimately completed just minutes before the window closed.

2. Radamel Falcao

Now that the loan deal to United has been confirmed, Radomel Falcao will surely give his agent a pat on the back. The star is understood to be set to earn an incredible £350,000-a-week.

3. Hull

Premier League club Hull City brought in four new players on Monday’s transfer deadline day, including Uruguay international striker Abel Hernandez from Italian side Palermo for “a club-record fee”.

Having lost valuable players such as Shane Long and George Boyd recently, the belated new signings are likely to give their squad a much-needed boost.

4. Southampton

Having at one stage looked somewhat depleted owing to the departure of several important players, the Saints have made some clever signings since.

Yesterday was no exception, with the arrival on a season-long loan of Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid a particularly exciting prospect.

5. Javier Hernandez

Given that he regularly struggled to hold down a place at Man United, the Mexican international has done very well indeed to secure a loan move and (presumably) a better contract at Real Madrid.

Whether he gets more playing time at the Spanish side than he did at United, however, is another matter.

LOSERS

1. Man City

The club failed in their attempts to sign Radomel Falcao and sold Alvaro Negredo to Valencia, leaving them with just three established strikers, two of whom are considered injury prone.

2. Jermain Defoe

It wasn’t quite Peter Odemwingie levels of cringe, but by all accounts, Jermain Defoe made no secret of his desire to secure a move back to the Premier League before the window closed. While several clubs including Leicester and QPR were understood to be interested, Toronto were unfortunately unwilling to let their star player leave.

3. The Sky Sports News reporters

The poor Sky Sports News reporters had to put up with plenty of distractions over the course of Deadline Day, and yet they manfully tried to retain a sense of professionalism regardless.

4. Tom Cleverley

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Norwich City v Manchester United - Carrow Road EMPICS Sport EMPICS Sport

Unwanted by Manchester United, the midfielder reportedly rejected the advances of Villa in favour of a move to Everton. Sadly for Cleverley though, the Toffees were unwilling to match the Villains’ offer, meaning he is stuck at Old Trafford until January at the earliest.

5. Arsenal

Having started the day hoping to sign Radamel Falcao, they ended up having to settle for Danny Welbeck. The England international is not a bad player, but Arsenal desperately need a goalscorer right now, and the 23-year-old star is unlikely to solve that problem.
