WANT TO GET fit but can’t afford a personal trainer? Want to carefully analyse how much you eat and how far you walk in a day?
We’ve trawled the internet for the coolest ones out there — and taken a slightly unfair bias to the free ones…
What? Myfitnesspal
Why? Take a bow, Mike Lee! The founder of this app has seen his baby downloaded 10 million times and 97% of users have given it a five-star rating.
Given there are over 100,000 health and fitness apps available, they’re fairly significant numbers.
In essence, it helps you lose weight and basically allows you track your calorie intake by clicking from a list of five million food items.
It’s easy to use, high personalised and tracks over 350 cardio and strength exercises.
Oh, and the app was recently bought for around half-a-million quid. Nice work.

* What? Fitocracy
Why? It plans workouts, assesses your fitness, provides you with tips on nutrition and sets goals for you. You basically earn points through your workouts and you can only progress when the app says so. Whether you’re trying to run faster, get a six-pack or build mass, it’s got plans tailored to your requirements. You can also see what your friends are doing on it if they’ve the app….another nice way to drive you on.

What? Moves
Why? No denying it’s fairly basic but have you ever wondered how far you’ve walked in a day, or ran on a night out? This GPS-reliant app tracks your every movement and shows it on a map and timeline. It’s pretty cool and very VERY easy to use, though if the jury is out on how accurate it is and it drains the life out of your battery…

What? Amazing sandwiches
Why? Okay so it’s not exactly ‘fitness’ but then again, a correct diet is one very important aspect of getting into the shape you’ve always dreamed of.
And who doesn’t love an amazingly healthy and tasty sambo? This app even gives you a free trial and they sure saw this person sign up for it when they posted a sample recipe featuring lean ground beef, hot sausage cranberry sauce and Swiss cheese….

What? My Diet Coach
Why? Again, it’s more of a diet one but one of the best on the market now. It is incredibly cringe at times, what with virtual rewards and a food-craving panic button but there’s merit in some of its offerings. Like reminders to eat more vegetables, drink more water and get that 20-minute blast of daily exercise.
We question how useful an app is when you’re faced with a tray of trifle at the annual GAA dinner dance at the weekend…but we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.
