Wes Hoolahan in line for West Brom extension following 'first-class' FA Cup showing

The 36-year-old signed a short-term contract with the Baggies in September.

WES HOOLAHAN IS in line for an extension to his short-term contract at West Bromwich Albion following a string of impressive performances, the latest a man-of-the-match display against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup.

Albion won the game 1-0 with Hoolahan bewitching in a relatively unfamiliar false nine role. The Dubliner, now 36, played the first 70 minutes of the game with manager Darren Moore hailing his impact as โ€œabsolutely first classโ€.

Hoolahan signed a short-term deal with the Baggies in September, having left Norwich at the start of the summer. That contract is due to expire in the middle of January, but Moore has confirmed that the club are interested in extending the deal to the end of the season.

โ€œIโ€™m due to speak to his adviser, heโ€™s coming to the end of his contractโ€, Moore told local outlet Express & Star. โ€œIโ€™ll look at addressing that this week, Iโ€™ve just got my head down in the Christmas period because itโ€™s been a busy time. This week presents an opportunity to speak to Wes and his adviser and look at the best way going forwardโ€.

Should Hoolahan agree to an extension, he will be in contention for a reunion with his former club Norwich City at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.

Hoolahan served the Canaries for ten years, and made an emotional farewell to the club at the end of last season.

I think that Cyprus defeat is far too long ago now to still be an issue in the slightest. Euro 2012 was a killer though and Iโ€™d prefer we didnโ€™t qualify for Euro 2016 as I couldnโ€™t stomach another humiliation on that scale.

That was a desperately unlucky draw, that was a nightmare group.

A win against Poland and Scotland at home and itโ€™ll all appear a lot differently. On our day, with the right players fit, we are more than capable of doing so.

This article is one hell of a knee-jerk reaction. Scrappy game, tough atmosphere against a side who a better than us on current form. Itโ€™ll probably be the exact same game at home but i fancy us to win it

The article title may be a genuinely held belief but itโ€™s guff. Ireland is a third tier team full of journeymen players. That our first choice keeper still plays for Millwall, and our first choice striker is pension age should be enough of a red flag for even the most loyal supporters.

Once we accept that, then results like last nightโ€™s can be appreciated with perspectiveโ€ฆ.

Greece sacking Ranieri is knee jerk; this article isnโ€™t.

Itโ€™s well thought out and to the point. Too many Irish fans are shamelessly clinging onto the hope that the national side have a sincere hope of performing consistently. They donโ€™t.

A few positive results might improve the overall standings for a newly formatted competition which is near impossible not to qualify for. Qualification for Euro 2016 is not a great achievement, yet itโ€™s one which Irish fans should be overwhelmed with. Under par achievements are the best Ireland will ever attain.
