OFF THE BACK of a huge 2018 Hockey World Cup run in London which ended with silver medals, Graham Shaw’s Ireland have powered through the FIH Hero World rankings to eighth.
The Green Army entered the tournament ranked 16th in the world but after historic wins over the US and India in the group stages and dramatic penalty shootout successes over India again and Spain in the quarter and semi-finals, they’ve powered up eight places.
The Netherlands remain the world’s best team — a position they have held since 2011 — following a 6-0 victory over Ireland — whose previous highest ranking was 14th — in the final. It was their eighth World Cup title.
England remain in second following their sixth-place finish on home soil, while Australia jumped to third. Spain, bronze medallists in London, move to seventh in the rankings.
It’s OFFICIAL, we have jumped from 16th to 8th in the world rankings #GreenArmy #HWC2018 ☘️🏑💚 https://t.co/AyMAdK9RVI
