LAST UPDATE | 14 Jun 2018
RORY MCILROY HAS endured a desperately tough start to the 2018 US Open after carding an opening round of 80 at Shinnecock Hills.
After finishing his front nine seven over, McIlroy double bogeyed his 10th hole (hole 1), with this frustrating bunker coming after he twice found the rough.
McIlroy began his round on the 10th with a par before dropping six shots in his next four holes, including a pair of double bogeys.
McIlroy finished 10 over par and he’s in good company with other big name players struggling during their first round like Jason Day (+9) and Jordan Spieth (+8) Phil Mickelson (+8) and Hideki Matsuyama (+5).
Leading the way on a clubhouse lead of one under is England’s Ian Poulter and American Scott Piercy,
Shane Lowry is due to tee off at 7.09pm while Graeme McDowell is two over after his opening hole.
