The first batch of World Cup tickets go on sale this week and you can apply for Ireland matches

Phase One begins on Thursday.

THE REPUBLIC OF Ireland’s participation at next summer’s World Cup may hang in the balance, but fans will be able to apply for tickets from later this week.

Russia hosts the 32-nation tournament in June with 24 places still up for grabs as only Brazil, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Belgium, Saudi Arabia and South Korea are guaranteed to join the host nation so far.

Martin O’Neill’s side must win their final two Group D matches next month and hope results elsewhere go their way in order to book a spot in the play-offs.

On Thursday, however, Phase One of ticket sales for the finals begins. From 10am Irish time, supporters will be able to log on to Fifa’s website and apply for four different types of tickets.

They are:

  • Individual Match Tickets – For one of the 64 games taking place at the finals.
  • Team Specific Tickets - For fans looking to follow specific teams, they can apply for between three matches (group games) and seven matches (group games plus round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final) involving the nation of their choice. However, if for instance Ireland don’t qualify, your payment will be refunded minus an administration fee of €8.30.
  • Supporter Tickets and Conditional Supporter Tickets – Like the Team Specific Tickets, Supporter Tickets allow you to apply for the group stage matches played by your nation. Conditional Supporter Tickets, meanwhile, refer to the four knockout stages matches (round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final) that the team of your choice could potentially be involved in. As Fifa explains: “If your team is eliminated, your right to be provided with, and use, the ordered Conditional Supporter Ticket(s) for such Second Round Match(es) will automatically cease to exist. In such cases you will be refunded for any Second Round match ticket(s) purchased by you and not played by your team due to elimination, minus a handling charge deducted by Fifa equivalent to €8.30 per customer/guest (up to a maximum of €33.20), regardless of the number of second round matches you may have covered through your request”.
  • Venue Specific Ticket Series – For games played at individual stadia.

Match tickets are split into four categories (Category 4 are exclusively for Russian residents). The group games will cost between €90 and €180, while a ticket for the final would set you back between €395 and €955.

Bit ridiculous that Russians get to watch group games for less than €20 but fans have to pay at least €90. Maybe for games than don’t sell out but it shouldn’t be the case for big group games

@COYBIG: think I’ll apply for tickets for the final and semi finals. At least you can expect decent teams to be left at that stage :-) :-)

@Sloop John G: you’d think that, I applied and got tickets to the semi final of Euro 2004 in Porto, ended up being Greece v Czech, stadium wasn’t even full easily 10,000 seats empty, terrible game (1-0 aet) and the atmosphere was even worse, can’t go wrong with the final I’d say though

@Ruairí Mul: I was only kidding really Ruairì. I expect some corrupt Russians have already got all those tickets snapped up to sell on at 10 times the original cost.

Why would you want to go to a shitehole like Russia. Anti Gay Rights ruled by a glorified dictatorship, censorship of the press corruption etc. Their fans at Euro 2016 showed their class. The logistics ,even the distances between stadiums is massive. Better watching it in a bar in Spain. As an Irish Fan I more hopeful than confident that we will be there.

@Colly08: lies. I’ve gay friends in Moscow and none of them are complaining. All have good jobs, incomes, friends etc. No surprise your opinion matches the local media. By the way if you get your tickets you can travel visa-free to Russia.

@NsSNBbTZ: Ha Denis that’s where you are wrong my friend. Iv spent 7 months working in Russia (Moscow and in rural areas around the Baltic states) on various Telco projects three years ago. My comments above stand as I have actually witnessed this myself. Oh at that stage Russia was funding a rebel war in a Democratic country called Ukraine ever hear of that. I suppose the thugs in France for Euro 16 was fiction by the local press also.
