GERMAN PROSECUTORS HAVE charged the man suspected of committing the nail-bomb attack on Borussia Dortmund’s team bus back in April with 28 counts of attempted murder.
The Bundesliga side were en route to the Westfalenstadion for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final versus Monaco on 11 April when three explosions rocked the bus, with spanish defender Marc Bartra suffering a broken wrist.
The game was subsequently delayed by 24 hours before a visibly disturbed Dortmund suffered a 3-2 defeat, exiting the tournament 6-3 on aggregate.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office alleged that the 28-year-old Russian-German suspect, identified only as ‘Sergej W’, was motivated by financial gain after buying options entitling him to sell Dortmund shares at a set price on the day of the attack.
On Tuesday, the prosecutor’s office in Dortmund said: “We charge him with attempted murder in 28 cases which coincide with each other and with dangerous bodily injury in two instances.”
It declined to provide further information due to the suspect and his defence lawyers having not yet received the charge sheet.
The district court of Dortmund now must decide as to whether the prosecution will be carried out. It is not expected to begin this year.
