RONAN MCCARTHY HAS been appointed as the new Cork senior football boss on a three-year term.
The Douglas native succeeds Peadar Healy, who stepped down in the wake of Cork’s qualifier loss to Mayo in July.
The announcement was made this afternoon in a statement on the Cork GAA website.
In the statement McCarthy appointed was termed as ‘coach’, part of a Cork county board plan to appoint someone who can manage and coach the team.
He will have responsibility for appointing his management team.
McCarthy previously served as a Cork senior football selector with Cork under Conor Counihan in 2013, and then under Brian Cuthbert in 2014 and 2015.
He guided Carbery Rangers to their first Cork senior football title last October and was manager when Douglas reached the senior decider in 2008.
During his player career, McCarthy won two Munster senior medals, a league title and an All-Ireland minor medal in 1991.
He was corner-back for Cork’s loss to Meath in the 1999 All-Ireland senior final.
“The experience Ronan has at club and county level made him an ideal choice for this demanding role,” stated Cork chairman Ger Lane.
“He has been immersed in club and county football since his playing days ended and is well qualified to take this position.
“On behalf of everyone associated with Cork GAA, I would like to wish Ronan every success in his new role, and we all look forward to a successful period ahead.”
