TEN GAMES, TEN wins.
That’s Waterford’s all-time senior hurling championship record against fellow All-Ireland finalists Galway, as the counties prepare to lock horns in a 3 September decider for the very first time.
Incredibly, Galway have never beaten the Déise in a senior championship fixture – but fans of the Tribesmen know that there’s no better time to end that run.
They first locked horns in a 1938 All-Ireland semi-final and it’s been a tale of woe for Galway against Waterford ever since.
Along the way, there were three Munster championship meetings, as Galway endured a generally forgettable 11-year spell in the southern province.
The most recent clash between them took place in 2011, when a Waterford team managed by Davy Fitzgerald managed to bounce back from a 21-point Munster final mauling against Tipp to dump Galway out.
The much-anticipated 11th senior hurling championship fixture between Galway and Waterford next month promises to be a game to savour.
History is very much on Waterford’s side – but Galway will hope to end that barren run and land the Liam MacCarthy Cup for the first time since 1988.
