IRELAND’S LEONA MAGUIRE remains on track to defend a prestigious amateur award at the Ricoh British Open this weekend.
The Cavan native is three clear of England’s Sophie Lamb, after carding a two-under 70 in the third round, to leave her on six-under overall for the tournament.
Maguire hit two birdies on the front nine, along with a burst of par shots on the back nine to maintain her position at the front of the low amateur pack in Scotland.
Today’s performance leaves her in a strong position to retain the Smyth Salver, which she won at last year’s event following a 25th place finish.
She was the third Irish female golfer to reach that feat and saw her follow in the footsteps of Mary McKenna and Barbara Hackett.
After a second round of 71 yesterday, Maguire has since dropped down the overall leaderboard, and sits thirteen strokes behind the leader In-Kyung Kim of South Korea.
