Ex-Munster centre James Downey takes up coaching role with Clontarf

Downey will work as backs coach with a responsibility for the contact area.

FORMER NORTHAMPTON SAINTS and Munster inside centre James Downey has been named as part of Andy Wood’s coaching ticket at Clontarf.

The 36-year-old Dubliner retired from professional rugby in 2016 having spent seasons with Glasgow and Wasps after departing the southern province.

A player-coach with Monkstown last season, the one-time Ireland international replaces long-serving Simon Broughton as backs coach for last season’s beaten finalists, with the Kiwi taking up an elite player development role with Leinster.

Former Ireland international scrum-half Tania Rosser will continue as head coach of Clontarf’s J1 team.
