ROSCOMMON PLAYERS AND MANAGEMENT have spoken out against the booing of Mayo forward Andy Moran by their supporters during last Sunday’s All-Ireland quarter-final.
The clash at Croke Park saw the teams finish all square and during the game it was noticeable that Moran was jeered any time he was in possession.
Moran kicked 0-2 from play and there was cheers when he was substituted in the 57th minute as Conor Loftus was introduced.
The negativity towards Moran is likely to have stemmed from the fact that he plays his club football in Ballaghaderreen, the town that is geographically located in Roscommon but has long been affiliated to Mayo in GAA terms.
The club have recently been crowned Mayo senior football champions in 2008 and 2012. Moran’s Ballaghaderreen club-mate David Drake was also introduced in the closing stages of Sunday’s replay.
Ahead of next Monday’s replay, the Roscommon management and players have issued a statement where they do not condone the behaviour.
“Roscommon Senior Football management and players would like to publicly thank the many Roscommon supporters who travelled to Croke Park to support them.
“During the game, it was obvious that a section of Roscommon supporters tried to upset Andy Moran by booing him while on or near the ball.
“The Roscommon players and management do not condone this behavior from any set of fans but especially our own and believe it has no place in Gaelic games or indeed any sport.
“We strongly urge all supporters to please refrain from booing any player.
“We as a team have a value set and we always try and play the game in a sporting manner and expect our supporters to support in a similar manner.
“Thank you for your continued support.”
