SOPHIE O’SULLIVAN, THE daughter of former world champion and Olympic silver medallist Sonia, enhanced her growing reputation as one of the brightest young talents in athletics with a powerful performance at the Morton Games this evening.
Already U17 Australian champion over 800m and 1500m, the 15-year-old stormed to victory in the Women’s 800m B race in Santry earlier, crossing the line in a time of 2:11.13.
O’Sullivan, representing Ballymore Cobh, pulled clear down the home straight and was afforded the luxury of easing up as she crossed the line to claim the title at the prestigious international event.
Running from lane seven, the teenager was content to sit back during the opening lap, reaching the bell in fifth position, before timing her charge and kicking on strongly over the last 200 metres.
Rio Olympian Ciara Mageean headlined Wednesday’s meet, but the Portaferry native’s bid to become the first Irish woman to break two minutes over 800m fell short as she clocked a time of 2:02.20.
Both Thomas Barr and Mark English were forced to withdraw from the men’s 800m through injury.
