A GREAT WEEKEND for Irish rowing got better today as Gary and Paul O’Donovan claimed a silver medal at the World Rowing Cup in Poland today.
On the back of Mark O’Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll’s gold medal yesterday, the O’Donovans almost emulated their Irish colleagues’ feat but ultimately had to settle for a runners-up spot in the Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls Final.
The Skibbereen brothers finished with a time of 06:15.330, just behind France’s Pierre Houin and Jeremie Azou — the pair who also best them to gold at the 2016 Olympics — as they emerged victorious with a time of 06:12.400.
Meanwhile, Polish pair Jerzy Kowalski and Milosz Jankowski were third, finishing in 06:15.900.
Earlier, Ireland’s Sanita Puspure was victorious in the Women’s Single Sculls B final with a time of 07:28.790 ahead of USA’s Meghan O’Leary (07:29.350) and fellow Irish athlete Monika Dukarska (07:32.340) in second and third respectively.
That outcome meant Puspure and Dukarska finished seventh and ninth overall.
