UCD CLOSED THE gap on SSE Airtricity First Division leaders Waterford United with a 2-0 win in Athlone.
In Roddy Collins’ first home game, the hosts held out until the 58th minute when Josh Collins pounced on a loose ball and forcing it home after a goalmouth scramble.
With just under 20 minutes to go, George Kelly tucked away a second for the Students to ensure they move to within a point of Alan Reynolds’ men.
Elsewhere, Cabinteely made light work of Shelbourne at Tolka Park.
Pat Devlin’s side opened the scoring through Joe Doyle after just nine minutes but Shels fired back soon after with James English heading home.
The guests retook the lead later in the half when Conor Keely found the net. The game was put beyond any doubt when Cabinteely scored a third through Aidan Collins’ own goal before Christian Lotefa made it 4-1 in injury time.
