PADDY PURCELL BAGGED 3-6 from play in a stunning display as Laois ran out comfortable 3-25 to 2-13 winners over Meath in the Leinster SHC round robin Round 2 today.
Meath met a Laois side in very good form, as 3-5 of Purcell’s tally arrived in the opening-half, leaving the Midlands outfit ahead by 3-13 to 0-7 at the break.
Meath improved after the interval with Stephen Clynch, who finished with 1-6, and Joe Keena hitting the net. But late scores from Ross King, Neil Foyle, Aidan Corby and Aaron Dunphy handed Laois a convincing win.
In the other round robin game, Kerry defeated Westmeath on a scoreline of 0-20 to 2-12.
The Kingdom led by seven points at half-time, but a number of frees from Alan Devine pulled the Lake County back into contention before Andrew Mitchell netted a three-pointer.
Shane Nolan and Mikey Boyle kept the scoreboard ticking over for Kerry but Westmeath’s Killian Doyle goaled from a penalty four minutes from time to reduce the gap to three.
Robbie Greville followed that up with a point, but Westmeath ran out of time.
