RORY MCILROY HAS ridiculed Muirfield golf club for taking so long to allow female members.
The change was ratified yesterday when an 80.2% majority voted in favour but that came after a failed attempt to alter the rules in May 2016. Tuesdayโs decision now means the course is eligible to host the British Open once again.
And McIlroy has lashed out at the Edinburgh venue, referring to the previous rule as โhorrendousโ and โobsceneโ.
โIn this day and age, where youโve got women that are, like, the leaders of certain industries and women that are heads of state and (theyโre) not able to join a golf club?โ, he said.
I mean, itโs obscene. Itโs ridiculous. So, they sort of saw sense. I still think it got to the stage โ this stage โ itโs horrendous. Weโll go back and weโll play The Open Championship because theyโll let women members in but every time I go to Muirfield now I wonโt have a great taste in my mouthโ.
McIlroy was also quizzed on how 20% of the clubโs members voted to keep the status quo.
โItโs horrendous. I just donโt get it. Weโll go back there for The Open Championship at some point and I wonโt be having many cups of tea with the members afterwardsโ.
I canโt see any reason why not too.
Why is it controversial? Itโs within the rules isnโt it?
Yes Dave, clearly itโs within the rules, or they couldnโt do it. But if you missed the controversy that surrounded it then you mustโve been VERY distracted!!! So basically, itโs controversial because it isnโt normally done and is considered by some to be against the spirit of the game. That answer your rhetorical question?
I think they should call their no ruck ploy โthe Eddie Jonesโ
