CHRISTINA DESMOND ENSURED that Ireland will not return home from the Women’s European Boxing Championships empty-handed as she guaranteed herself a bronze medal at minimum.
Desmond beat Russia’s Oksana Trofimova in the middleweight quarter-finals in Sofia, Bulgaria on Sunday evening.
But there was disappointment for Moira McElligott and for Grainne Walsh who lost their own quarter-finals against Natalya Samokhina and Saadat Abdulaeva respectively.
Cork’s Desmond will be back in the ring on Tuesday afternoon when she faces Maily Nicar of France in the 75kg semis.
The other semi-final is an all-British affair between England’s Natasha Gale and Lauren Price of Wales.
