DERRY’S SLAUGHTNEIL REMAIN on course for a historic Ulster senior club championship treble after today but Down’s Kilcoo will be the formidable final football hurdle that they must overcome to achieve that.
Slaughtneil saw off Tyrone’s Killyclogher by 1-11 to 0-8 this afternoon at the Athletic Grounds at the senior football semi-final stage, while Kilcoo’s goalscoring power was central to them overcoming Armagh’s Maghery by 4-13 to 0-12 at Páirc Esler.
Last month Slaughtneil lifted their maiden Ulster hurling title, the club’s senior camogie side have also been crowned provincial champions this season and on the football front they maintained the winning run this afternoon.
Meehaul McGrath’s early second-half goal was the crucial moment for Mickey Moran’s side after they had been in front 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.
Paul Bradley kicked 0-5 for the winners while Christopher Bradley chipped in with 0-2 for a Slaughtneil team that will hope to replicate their 2014 Ulster final win.
The 2015 All-Ireland club finalists staved off the challenge of a Killyclogher team whose top scorer was Mark Bradley with 0-4.
Elsewhere Kilcoo reached their second Ulster club decider in five years with a 4-13 to 0-12 victory against Maghery in Newry.
In 2012 Kilcoo lost out to Crossmaglen in the final by six points but had little trouble in winning today’s game against Armagh opponents.
They were in front 1-8 to 0-4 at the break with Ryan Johnston their goalscorer while Maghery lost Aidan Forker to a straight red card.
Kilcoo added three goals in the second-half with Callum Doherty bagging a brace and JJ McLoughlin also raising a green flag.
The final between the Derry and Down opponents will take place on 27 November.
