3…2…1… Here’s our favourite Royal Rumble moments of all time!

Forget your Superbowls and World Series. The biggest night in American sports entertainment is tonight.

FILE THIS ONE under guilty pleasures along with your Michael Buble albums. But the Royal Rumble is on tonight… here’s some of our favourite moments from down through the years.

1. Stalemate

One for Hawkeye. The first and only draw in the ‘January Classic’ as Lex Luger and my super-fave at the time, Bret Hart are both declared the winner. You might remember they both got a shot at Yokozuna at Wrestlemania later in the year.

2. ‘What is that?!’ – Giant Gonzalez introduces himself

Damien Demento took his sweet time getting down the ramp. And rightly so. The first sight we ever got of seven-footer Giant Gonzalez was when he emerged — uninvited — into the 1993 event to take on the Undertaker. We were all very freaked out when we got the tape of our friend Barry the next day in school.

3. Hulkster does it again

‘I don’t fancy the Hulk’s chances here!” Shurrup, Gene! All the Hulkamanics watching around the world knew Earthquake et al didn’t stand a chance at the end of the 1991 Rumble. Not the most spectacular finish admittedly. Simpler times.

4. Shaun Michaels wins for the second year on the trot

HBK hangs on to the top rope, gets back in and then sweet-chin-musics his pal Diesel out of the ring. And then Big Daddy Cool returns to the ring…

5. Jerry Lawlor hides under the ring

In 1996, the King at last took the advice I’d been shouting at the telly for years, through mouthfuls of Coco Pops. Just hide under the ring! Lawlor did so and proceeded to peek out every now and then for the benefit of us watching at home. Shaun Michaels eventually dragged him out and threw him over the top rope. Comedy gold, though.
