EAMONN FITZMAURICE HAS been handed a new two-year term as Kerry senior football manager, it has been confirmed tonight.
A county committee meeting took place where the announcement was made about the position of Kingdom boss, with a statement released to media outlets confirming the news.
Fitzmaurice has been in charge of Kerry since August 2012 when he took up a three-year term. The Finuge man was reappointed for one season in the wake of last September’s All-Ireland final loss with that tenure ending when Kerry were defeated in the recent epic All-Ireland semi-final clash with Dublin.
Fitzmaurice, a former Kerry senior selector and county U21 manager, has guided Kerry to a Munster senior four-in-a-row along with the 2014 All-Ireland final victory over Donegal.
Kerry have only lost three championship games under Fitzmaurice’s watch with Dublin the victors on all three occasions in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
Former Kerry captain Billy O’Shea welcomed the news of the impending appointment when speaking to Radio Kerry.
“I like the fact that it’s been announced pretty quickly as well because if it had gone any longer, there’d be speculation.
At least now it’s put to bed that he is going to be coming back for two years, which I think is a good thing because I think Eamonn has laid down an awful lot of foundation work.
“He can bring young fellas into the panel because we have a lot of good minors from the last couple of years coming through.
I think he’ll be looking forward to working with them as well. I think it’s a new start.”
