MARY CULLEN’S HOPES of qualifying for this summer’s Olympic Games have been cruelly shattered by an untimely hamstring injury.
The Sligo runner has been forced to withdraw from this evening’s women’s 5,000m at the European Championships and with it goes her final chance of booking a ticket for Rio.
Cullen was due to run in Amsterdam this evening after narrowly missing out on the qualifying time of 15.24 last month and at a meet in California in April.
It’s another cruel blow for the 33-year-old who missed the chance to compete at London and Beijing through injury.
The former European Indoor 3,000m bronze medalist expressed her disappointment on Twitter:
