A HORRIBLE RUN of four bogeys in five holes consigned Shane Lowry to a disappointing six-over-par score after day one of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last night.
Lowry, the defending champion who finished in a tie for second at the US Open two weeks ago, shot 76 with only a birdie on the second as silver lining in Akron.
12 shots up the leaderboard is American William McGirt who leads a tournament record three shots after 18 holes thanks to his barnstorming round of 64.
World number one Jason Day is tied for second place three shots back thanks to a bogey-free back nine, where two of his four birdies came at 11 and 15 – the holes that book-ended Lowry’s bogey run.
Despite hitting just one green in regulation on the front nine, Spieth is one shot further back thanks to some superb putting that helped him save par on numerous occasions. Spieth is tied with Rickie Fowler and Charley Hoffman while US Open champion Dustin Johnston shot an even-par 70.
