WORLD NUMBER 624 Andrew Landry is the current leader at the US Open but the weather was the real story of the opening round.
The 28-year-old Texan, playing in his first major, sits on -3 through 17 holes and is one shot clear of Bubba Watson and Danny Lee.
But play was called off for the day at 4:34pm as more thunderstorms swept in from the west.
The players were brought off the Oakmont course for a third time at 3:51 pm and shortly after that, as the weather system sent rain lashing down, an announcement was made that “play has officially been suspended for the day.”
Two earlier delays, of 79 minutes and nearly two and a half hours, had already played havoc with the schedule and ensured that many players would be unable to complete their first rounds before the end of the day.
When play was finally suspended, only nine players out of a field of 156 had completed their rounds.
The clubhouse leader was 19-year-old American amateur Scottie Scheffler, who carded a one-under 69.
Defending champion Jordan Spieth is +1 through 11, but world number three Rory McIlroy has had a poor start and is at +4.
Shane Lowry is best of the Irish on evens par through 11 holes.
