MARC WILSON’S RETURN from injury lasted just 45 minutes this afternoon as he was forced out of Stoke’s behind closed doors friendly against Crewe Alexandra.
The Ireland defender was making his first appearance since sustaining knee ligament damage in January but the Stoke Sentinel are reporting his comeback was cut short.
The 28-year-old limped out of the game minutes after half-time as his chances of proving his fitness ahead of Euro 2016 suffered another blow.
Wilson later tweeted to say the injury isn’t as bad as first thought and it was just sore after a tackle.
He had been making good progress to this point and manager Mark Hughes recently said that the centre-back ‘wasn’t far away’ from returning to first-team action.
Wilson was originally ruled out for three months after suffering medial ligament damage in the FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace.
With Seamus Coleman nursing a hamstring injury, these are worrying times for O’Neill as Ireland’s opening game of the tournament draws ever closer.
Goalkeeper Rob Elliot and Brentford’s Alan Judge are already ruled out of the tournament while question marks remain over the fitness of Harry Arter, Daryl Murphy, Jeff Hendrick and Jon Walters.
