THERE WAS HEARTBREAK for a young St Kevin’s Boys side in the Academy Cup today, as they were beaten by Barcelona on penalties in the final of the competition today.
After Barca took the lead in today’s final, Roland Banya’s goal put the North Dublin side on level terms.
The Catalan side then surged into a 3-1 lead before half-time. However, the Irish team fought back valiantly, as goals from Eoghan Heavey and Jamie Egan ensured the game went to a penalty shootout, with Barca narrowly prevailing thereafter.
It’s been a bittersweet week for the Saints — despite this afternoon’s disappointment, they produced some impressive displays and even earned a 1-0 win over Barcelona in the prestigious U13s tournament yesterday.
St Kevin’s Boys are renowned as one of the top youth sides in Irish football, helping to produce a number of players, including Robbie Brady, Jeff Hendrick and Jack Byrne in recent years.
