PAUL GALVIN’S RETIREMENT as a Kerry senior footballer was confirmed by Kingdom manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice after today’s McGrath Cup clash in Killarney.
It marks the second time Galvin’s retirement has been announced after he previously called it a day in February 2014.
But Galvin made a sensational return last March to the Kerry setup and despite injuries hampering his 2015 campaign, he was introduced as a second-half substitute in last September’s All-Ireland final loss to Dublin.
On this occasion Galvin’s retirement decision looks to be definitive and that Dublin game will be his last appearance in Kingdom colours.
Speaking on Newstalk’s ‘Off The Ball’ last November, Galvin had hinted that work commitments would prevent him for getting involved again in 2016.
Kerry’s squad returned yesterday from a team holiday to Florida and after watching an experimental side lose to Clare this afternoon in Fitzgerald Stadium, Fitzmaurice confirmed to reporters that Galvin had retired for a second time.
But in better news for Kerry fans, Fitzmaurice did reveal that the rest of Kerry’s squad is available for action this year and that means veterans like Marc Ó Sé and Aidan O’Mahony are set to prolong their inter-county careers.
Outside of Gaa politics a great player good luck to him
Time for Galvin to concentrate on looking at himself in the mirror.
Time to get off your high horse Paul, credit to any man making a living for himself not to mention the time he gave his country for no cash rewards
Chill out Gearoid; I have the height of respect for every GAA men and women, especially inter county players giving up their time for their counties even a Kerry man.
Our world cup hopes, look dodgy now?
Firstly I am a 100% Dub. Paul Galvin was an amateur player who played for the love of his County and like all amateur players is entitled to respect from all those who love and follow GAA. A great player who wore his heart on his sleeve and could increase the ferocity on the pitch when needed. Not sure he made the right decision coming out of retirement first time around. I wish him well and thank him for his contribution to our great National game…..Up the Dubs
Is there such a thing as a 100% Dub? How many generations can you go back?
Obviously you are still on the Ann & Barry book 1 but don’t worry it will all come together for you soon, until then I suggest you finish you home work, eat your cornflakes and get a good nights sleep.
Did I touch a raw nerve there Brian? Perhaps you meant to say you are a 100% Dubs fan/supporter? Now that’s an entirely different thing !!! Time for bed now as I’m exhausted after my homework and have to be up early for my cornflakes !!! Nighty night ☺
Best of luck to him, serious footballer.
Galvin is the kind of player that fans of rival counties love to hate but would have loved him to play for their county. The Dubs have it now with McMhaon. I’m surprised O’Se and O’Mahony didn’t retire but fair play to them.
Think Paul Galvin realises he s in a period of Dublin domination and there are no foreseeable handy All Ireland’s for Kerry to pick up
Best of luck to him anyway
Ya good man Damian, Kerry have only every won handy all irelands. 37 of them.
Stay classy Damian
You’d know your a political anyway.
Politician**
After securing an unprecedented one-in-a-row domination of All-Ireland football, the next challenge for Dub fans will be to learn to win with a semblance of graciousness.
Salt and vinegar?
Good way to discount the votes of any exiled Kerry natives in your constituency there Damian. Tell us do you normally speak/comment with your foot in your mouth?
Think Damian O’Farrell realises he’s in a period of other party domination and there are no foreseeable handy election votes to pick up. Best of luck to you anyway.
Tyrone building????? Dublin will be at the top table for a long time, they have the population and resources. But Kerry will always be there, they find 2 or 3 New players every year that fit in seamlessly. But Tyrone building I had to laugh at that.
What’s funny about a team who just made an all Ireland semi final and have a team of under 21 champions coming through ‘building’?
Damien as a true blue Dubs supporter your talking sh#te Galvin and the kerry teams through out the years have played great football,He was/is a great footballer. The Kerry fans are some of the best I was at the last all Ireland final and they congratulated us after loosing.
He’s been flogging a dead horse for couple of seasons. Best of luck to him.
Don’t think I hide that Dave M … can have an opinion though … he was a great player …. Kerry are a great GAA county … no foreseeable All Ireland’s for them though … Dublin dominating … Tyrone building up steam
How about just wishing the man well in his retirement without getting a dig in or are politicians not able to say anything genuine ??? Anyway best of luck to him on new marriage and retirement , caused clare many headaches in the past but was a tough operater !
Hahahahahahaha Mayo for Sam
Good man Damien. True to form; you row back fairly quickly there from even a hint of controversy. First you suggest Kerry can only win ‘handy’ All Ireland’s and then you revert to them being a great GAA county. ‘Handy All Ireland’ is the phrase of your typical hurler on the ditch, which is exactly what you are – in more ways than one I might add.
We will worry about Dublin dominating when they win back to back all Ireland’s until then there’s an all Ireland up for grabs this year! Spodge out!!
Mayo for sambos
You’re embarrassing yourself Damian.
Just not for Mayo Bottlers of the highest order
Probably the best overall player Kerry and country have had over last 15 years. Love him or hate him he was stuck everywhere
Knob….
You’re
Shouldn’t of been on the panel last year. He was finished a season or 2 before.it helps if your related to the management. Brought nothing to kerry in 2015
Yes Kerry won “handy” All Irelands in 2014 and 2009.what happened against Mayo in the Galeic grounds was a disgrace thanks to Cormac Reilly and again in 2009 against Cork when Marty Duffy got them over the line.
There is no such thing as a handy All Ireland. They must all be played for and WON.
also a capable hurler played on the kerry u21 team in 98 when they beat kildare in b final in 98 same day kildare beat kerry in senior football semi
Jimmys winning matches
spot on Mossy, 100%…
Great servent to the kingdom ….someone said hes designing the cork kit for 2017 and hes looking for ideas any thoughts
