TWO MORE IRISH athletes are set to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics after the IAAF lowered the qualifying time for a number of events.
Ciara Everard (800m) and Ciara Mageean (1500m) are expected to be rewarded after the qualification time for their events was lowered to 2:01.50 and 4:07.00 respectively.
It is down to individual member federations whether their entry standards will be amended in conjunction with the IAAF’s changes, and the Olympic Council of Ireland still need to ratify the changes, but Everard and Mageean now seem destined for a spot in Rio.
Down native Mageean, who missed out on London 2012 after suffering a foot injury, secured a time of 4:06.49 back in September, while Kilkenny-born Everard earned a time of 2:01.21 last May.
