AFTER CLAIMING INDIVIDUAL time trial honours on both the Vuelta a España and Tour de France this year, Tony Martin entered this week’s UCI Road World Championships the clear favourite to claim gold in the Men’s Elite TT.
Today, the German followed through on the promise of his recent form, negotiating the 46.4km Copenhagen city-centre course in 53 minutes 48.85 seconds, a mammoth 75 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger, Britain’s Bradley Wiggins.
Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland, a four-time world champion in the discipline, looked on track to leap-frog Wiggins into second place before colliding with a barrier in the latter stages of his run.
Ireland’s David McCann finished the event in 27th place, while national road race champion Matt Brammeier failed to finish.
