Surf report: Head north for the weekend's best waves

Ben Farr looks ahead to the Billabong Pro Tahiti, as well as picking out the best local spots for some surfing this weekend.

ONE OF THE greatest sights in surfing is that of a tiny surfer being dwarfed as he pulls into a huge barrel by the awesome wall of water that is known as Teahupo’o.

Teahupo’o is situated in the French Polynesian Island of Tahiti and offers one of the greatest challenges in surfing. One false move and you will be crushed by tons of raging water onto the shallow razor sharp reef that lays beneath.

This weekend sees event five of the ASP World Title season head to the infamous break in the South Pacific and the swell forecast is looking good for a monumental competition.

The Billabong Pro Tahiti presented by Air Tahiti Nui will commence on Saturday 20 August and will see all the top surfers in world looking to cement their places in the ASP world rankings.

Be sure to log onto billabongpro.com/tahiti11 to check out their live feed of the event and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

If you can’t wait that long, then check out this video of Laird Hamilton scoring what was to be dubbed “The Millennium Wave” at the monstrous break back in 2000.

Good waves everyone…

Weather Overview

A little closer to home, how are the waves looking here?

Today is a bit of a write-off as winds are high and swells are low. But as the weekend progresses we should see westerly swell building, although the epicenter of the swell will be in the northwest.

The North – Late Saturday should be epic. Winds are dropping and the swell is 3m+ at 11 second intervals. Get on it.

County Donegal/Sligo – Saturday is also looking decent with strong swells and offshore winds. If the winds are not too strong expect some quality surf.

County Clare – The southerly winds will not favour the west facing beaches. Still plenty of swell pushing in but will be cleaner elsewhere.

Dingle Peninsula – Forget Inch this is all about the north-side of the peninsula. Could be time to dust of that 6’9” Gun and see if Gary William Point is firing.

Cork & The South – The swell is in the north and the winds are southerly – a double whammy of suckiness for The Rebels. Sunday looks better though, especially late on if the wind changes direction.
