MARTIN OโNEILL HAS been boosted by the return of two players to training ahead of Sundayโs vital Euro 2016 qualifier against Poland.
While Darron Gibson departed for Everton after being ruled out on Wednesday, 27 of the 28-man squad took part at Gannon Park in Malahide today โ with Anthony Stokes the only absentee as he was due in court over an alleged nightclub assault.
Both Ward and McClean, who had sat out training earlier in the week, participated in the full session and OโNeill is optimistic that both will be available for selection.
โI think they have come through it and they didnโt complain at the end but sometimes it is an hour or two after training that you find out,โ OโNeill said. โBut they arenโt too bad.โ
Burnley full-back Ward has played just one minute of competitive of football since December and his fitness will be assessed later today.
โIโll have a word with him (Stephen) and see how he feels. This is the first bit of work that he has done. Fitness is very important but sometimes players can get through on adrenaline.
โYou wouldnโt want to be going in with four or five players having done very little but Stephen knows himself and if he thinks he can make it, that is good news for us.โ
As usual, OโNeill wonโt name his starting XI until an hour before kick-off and the Derry man was unsurprisingly keeping his cards close to his chest with two days still to go.
I think there are positions up for grabs, like there has always been since Iโm come here,โ he said. โAny international manager will tell you the same thing.
โHe has got an idea that he can formulate a couple of weeks beforehand but the first time you really consider it is when you have players at you disposal for the week of the game.
โSunday is the ultimate test but it has been a good week for the players.โ
Iโm quite scared by the idea that Stephen Ward can โget through on adrenalineโ against a decent team like Poland. It would be crazy to start him.
It would be crazy to start him full stop. Heโs too much of a liability at this level
Ward!!!! Oh noโฆ.
Ward returning is certainly not a boost,an absolute liability that has had so many chances to impress and has failed to do so.Cant even get a game for relegation threatened Burnley.Wilson,Clark,Brady and McClean arenโt even LBs by trade but is be more confident with any of them playing there instead of Ward, and especially a Ward thatโs carrying an injury and has seen no game time n months.
Stephen Ward returning is not a boost. Iโd love to know what dodgy info he has on OโNeill and Trap before him to keep getting picked. Awful player who has no business in an Ireland jersey.
Sure Trap dropped him for Wilson!
Ya he did eventually but took him long enough!
Far too long
Brady should play left back, not that ponce
Hasnโt played since December and even thinking of playing him is crazy !!! Thatโs not counting the fact heโs crap !!
You know your team is pretty crap when ward and McLean coming back from injury is considered a boost!
Nothin wrong with McClean, always gives his best in a green shirt, granted heโs no world beater heโs still an alright player
Heโs about to get relegated to league 1. Glen whelan gives his all still doesnโt make him good enough.
Brady hasnโt done enough to fair. Mc Clean can get up an down the flank. Play crosses and still defend. Another great white hope with Brady as usual
Ward hasnโt done a huge amount eitherโฆ30ish caps later
