No Irish bid for 2014 Heineken, Amlin Cup finals

The ERC has received three new bids after France pulled out of hosting next season’s European rugby finals.

ENGLAND, SCOTLAND AND Wales have lodged bids to host next season’s Heineken Cup and Amlin Challenge Cup finals.

The ERC confirmed today that it received three proposals after it was forced to re-open the bidding process for the 2014 showpieces.

The competitions were thrown into uncertainty earlier this month when the Federation Française de Rugby (FFR) informed tournament bosses that they would not be able to host the finals as planned, citing ongoing uncertainty about the availability of the Stade de France.

Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Twickenham in London are the three potential venues now under consideration for the Heineken Cup decider on 24 May 2014. The Board of the ERC hope to announce their decision early next month.

Dublin successfully hosted both finals this season with a capacity crowd of over 50,000 packing into the Aviva Stadium to see Toulon beat Clermont Auvergne.
