MARTIN O’NEILL MAY have to plan without James McClean for Ireland’s crunch Euro 2016 clash with Poland.
The Wigan winger emerged as an injury doubt at this morning’s session in Malahide.
McClean did not train with the rest of the squad and is due to have a scan on an ankle injury later today.
“It’s precautionary I hope,” O’Neill said. “He was feeling [his ankle] a little bit so we’ll see how he is.
“It wasn’t that it happened at training. He felt a little bit sore after yesterday.
“He thought that it might go away. It’s just a bit of a pain across the ankle.
“I haven’t picked the side yet. James has played exceptionally well for us in most of the games since I’ve been in charge. Obviously I know him quite well, I know him very well in fact, and he’s a good player for us.”
Stephen Ward (ankle) and Darron Gibson (groin) sat out training for a second day and their fitness will be monitored on a day-to-day basis between now on Sunday.
On Gibson, O’Neill said: I wouldn’t know the medical terms of it but it’s a groin strain and he’s still feeling it. Again, it’s only Tuesday, we’ll see how things develop.”
New call-up Harry Arter took part in his first training session as a senior international while Robbie Keane was present after flying in to join the squad last night but was given the morning off.
Are we going to get an article on everyone that won’t be captain?
@John Doe: no I’d say…
I think the captaincy, along with the squad will be reasonably settled and pragmatic.

@Paul Ennis: Serious looking squad to be fair and the right balance of captain / vice captain, with Ringrose perhaps taking the reins a couple of years out from the next world cup. I’ve been really impressed with Dooley since he’s gone to Connaught. Might be an option to blood a new loose head relatively risk free. I think Jager gets a go ahead of O’Toole when recovered from his head injury. Still plenty of other options across the squad, which is a great place to be.
@Paul Ennis: Herring most likely out due to injury so probable Stewart in stead
@TL55: Didn’t hear that. Doesn’t weaken the squad though.
Class act. I’d prefer if he didn’t captain Ireland yet. And just concentrate on his other stuff.
Has he captained Leinster?
@Colm O’ Brien: once. Slow News morning.
I’m paying a subscription and can only access the free articles. Took money on me this morning. Anyone else having this problem..
@Ed: No… but I had to keep logging in every time until I changed my phone and no issues since. You might need to try a new browser or clearing history and caches.
@Ed: it remembers me in the app only.
