JOHN O’DWYER WAS the scoring star as last year’s finalists Cork IT got off to a strong start in the Fitzgibbon Cup today.
Cork IT enjoyed a successful trip to Dublin for their opening Group A clash as they came away with an eight-point win over DCU.
The teams were level at 1-5 to 0-8 at the break but Cork IT took over in the second-half to triumph.
DCU suffered a major early setback when Kilkenny’s Pat O’Carroll was sent-off but they stayed in touch at the break thanks to Kevin O’Flynn’s goal.
CIT emerged in the second-half in a stronger position with O’Dwyer, Mark Ellis, Bill Cooper and Jack Herlihy tacking on points as they restricted DCU to just a single second-half point.
Elsewhere today in Group D, Galway’s Paul Killeen found the net in LIT’s 12-point success at home to UUJ this afternoon. The teams were evenly-matched in the opening period and were locked together at 0-7 apiece at the break.
But LIT pulled clear in the second-half and a goal from Killeen opened the floodgates as they ran out convincing winners.
The last game in Group A saw UCD run out comprehensive winners over St Pat’s in Belfield by 17 points.
