LIVERPOOL TOOK AN early lead before winning 1-0 in the weekend’s first Premier League game at the Stadium of Light.
Serbian winger Lazar Markovic started brightly and appeared to have earned his side a penalty in the fourth minute when he was brought down by Sunderland defender Wes Brown — but referee Craig Pawson waved away the protests.
The 20-year-old opened the scoring five minutes later, however. Pawson played advantage after Fabio Borini was fouled on the edge of the box and Markovic followed up to bundle the ball past Costel Pantilimon.

Sunderland’s Liam Bridcutt received a second yellow card early in the second half but the Reds were unable to take advantage of the extra man.
