ROUGHLY 17 YEARS after he was meant make his comeback from a virus, Darren Fletcher has been left out of Manchester United’s squad for the pre-season tour to the United States.
The Scot missed the vast majority of his side’s title run-in with a virus that resulted in significant weight loss. He had been expected to play in the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona but failed to even make the bench.
It was the second time he missed out on playing the Catalans on the biggest stage in European football, having missed the 2009 final through suspension.
Fletcher had been expected to play a full role in United’s preparations for the new season but he has been told to stay in Manchester and work on his conditioning.
Only one of United’s new signings, Ashley Young, has been named in the 21-man squad, with David de Gea and Phil Jones afforded an extended break.
