ROY KEANE HAS recalled a bust-up with former team-mate Peter Schmeichel during their playing days at Manchester United.
While on a pre-season tour of Asia back in 1998, two of Alex Fergusonโs greatest ever signings clashed in the team hotel after a night of drinking โ forcing the United boss to step in and break the fight up.
In his soon-to-be released autobiography The Second Half, as seen by The Daily Mirror, the Ireland assistant manager explains how the pair came to blows.
โI had a bust-up with Peter when we were on a pre-season tour of Asia, in 1998, just after I came back from my cruciate injury. I think we were in Hong Kong. There was drink involved.
โThereโd been a little bit of tension between us over the years, for football reasons. Peter would come out shouting at players, and I felt sometimes he was playing up to the crowd: โLook at me!โ
โHe was probably doing it for concentration levels, but I felt he did it too often, as if he was telling the crowd: โLook what I have to deal withโ.
โHe said: โIโve had enough of you, Itโs time we sorted this out.โ So I said โOkayโ and we had a fight. It felt like 10 minutes. There was a lot of noise โ Peterโs a big lad.
Peter had grabbed me, Iโd head-butted him โ weโd been fighting for ages.
โHe (Ferguson) told us that we were a disgrace to the club, and that weโd woken Bobby Charlton up, that Bobby had come out of his room and seen us.
โPeter took responsibility for the fight, which was good. I admired him for it. But Sir Bobby could have tried to break it up.โ
The Second Half hits shelves in Ireland this Thursday, 9 October
Ah poor Sir Bobby. If something wakes him, he is a nightmare to get down again
Is it just me or does anyone else dislike the idea of using a headbutt? Always seems a bit knackery to me
Roy is awful Keane on starting fights if youโll pardon the pun
Please stopโฆ.
He has proved time and time again that he has serious temper issues and has over inflated opinions of himself, but when it comes to actually doing it himself, as a manager, he canโt do it. Brilliant footballer but essentially a gobdaw
Now thatโs what I call a proper Football Bio anecdote. Granted there is a bit if the old ultra violence thrown in which may not be to everyoneโs taste. But like with most things with Keane, it ainโt dull.
And You @Lesley have grounds to Make a comment like that????Bit of a stupid thing to say.
