THE ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP announced on Wednesday that the base salary cap for its clubs will rise from £5 million to £5.1 million for the 2015-16 season.
Each team in the English top division will also be able to nominate two ‘marquee players’ whose salary is not included in the cap. Clubs can currently only exclude one player from the cap.
“We are delighted to confirm the number of England-qualified players in Premiership rugby has passed 70 percent for the first time, and we want to drive the numbers even higher,” said Premiership Rugby chief executive Mark McCafferty in a statement.
“The increase in the base level of the salary cap will help our clubs to retain English talent.”
The introduction of “home-grown player credits” means that clubs will also be able to increase their salary caps by £400,000 for players who joined a club academy before their 18th birthday and have been with the club for more than two years.
