SEVEN QUARTER-FINALISTS are now known in this year’s Cork senior hurling championship after the weekend’s action. Several Cork stars were involved as they returned to club games in the wake of last Sunday’s All-Ireland semi-final loss to Tipperary.
Na Piarsaigh, Youghal, Sarsfields, St Finbarr’s and Glen Rovers all booked spots in the last eight to join Newtownshandrum and Ballymartle at that stage. Reigning champions Midleton will face Douglas next weekend in the last fourth round game.
Cork senior hurler Patrick Horgan was one of four players sent-off last night in Páirc Uí Rinn as Glen Rovers defeated Bishopstown by 2-16 to 1-8. Horgan and Cork senior footballer Colm O’Driscoll for Bishopstown were both dismissed early on while both teams were reduced to 13 men before the finish.
A goal from Glenn Kennefick helped Glen Rovers lead 1-8 to 0-4 at the break and Conor Dorris added their second goal after half-time. A late goal from Thomas Murray couldn’t prevent Bishopstown falling to an 11-point defeat.
Early goals from Cork senior dual player Damien Cahalane and Robert O’Mahony paved the way for St Finbarr’s to defeat Erins Own by 3-12 to 1-9 yesterday in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Cathal McCarthy bagged St Finbarr’s third goal.
In the curtain-raiser at the same venue, 2012 champions Sarsfields survived against divisional side Carrigdhoun to win by 0-14 to 0-11. While Killeagh retained their senior status for another year with a 1-18 to 0-16 win over Courcey Rovers in last night’s relegation final.
On Friday night, Na Piarsaigh — who had Christopher Joyce, John Gardiner and Sean Og O h’Ailpín in action — ran out 0-18 to 2-9 victors over Bride Rovers while last year’s intermediate kingpins Youghal defeated 2011 champions Carrigtwohill by 0-13 to 1-7.
The quarter-final line-up now sees Na Piarsaigh face Newtownshandrum while Sarsfields take on St Finbarr’s. On the other side of the draw it’s Ballymartle up against Glen Rovers while Youghal face the winners of Midleton and Douglas.
