FORMER CORK SELECTOR Ger Cunningham will become the new UCC Fitzgibbon Cup hurling manager for the 2014-15 campaign.
Cunningham will take charge of the third-level outfit after enjoying success at the helm of the college’s Fresher hurling teams in recent years. His selection team will be completed by former Cork All-Ireland winner Tim Crowley, Noel Furlong, Tom Kingston, Jim McEvoy and Sean McGrath, the physical trainer of the Cork team when they won the 2004 and 2005 All-Ireland titles.
Cunningham was a selector with the Cork senior hurling team for the 2012 and 2013 seasons but departed in the wake of last September’s All-Ireland final replay loss to Clare.
During his playing career the St Finbarr’s club man won three All-Ireland senior hurling titles, four Allstar awards and seven Munster crowns.
He will take charge of UCC who have enjoyed great success in recent years as they won the Fitzgibbon Cup in 2012 and 2013 before then reaching the semi-final stage of the competition this year. Cunningham succeeds 2001 Tipperary All-Ireland winner Eddie Enright who has been in charge for the past two seasons.
